"Using COMICS and graphic novels to Promote Reading!"

Description

Phil Yeh's 1993 wordless graphic novel “The Winged Tiger” has been designated as one of the 25 best graphic novels in print. Phil speaks around the world about how to make your own graphic novel and about the importance of reading in the creative process. His workshops are filled with live drawing and lots of humor for all ages.

Workshop Objectives

1. To make clear that using the creative process can get our children to read more. If kids are in fact, making their own books - they will naturally be interested in reading other books.

2. To stress the wide variety of graphic novel themes in this world and to introduce some of the books to a library audience. Phil Yeh's own Winged Tiger series features original contributions of more than 200 guest artists from all over the world.

3. To demonstrate how to produce and publish your own comic book. Phil was already writing and drawing books before he entered elementary school. He began publishing professionally at the age of 16 and has earned a living from his art his whole life. He can teach anyone how to create books that have substance and that sell.

Phil Yeh was born October 7, 1954, in Chicago, and moved to Wayne, New Jersey, where he completed first grade before moving to Los  Angeles, California (near Watts). In L.A., he developed his unique storytelling skills, featuring multi-ethnic characters and non-violent story lines. He published one of the first graphic novels  in the US in 1977 and has already published, written and illustrated more than 80 books to date. In 1986, he introduced the famous "Read. Avoid Extinction" dinosaurs. Starting in the fall of 2005, he tours schools and libraries nationwide, holding graphic novel workshops in conjunction with an exhibit of his Dinosaur paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
